Since September 8, 1939, when Roosevelt declared a national emergency, at least 17 new medals and ribbons have been authorized to be presented to the president or senior members of the armed forces.

Today, many of them have returned from war service in foreign theaters and are seen on the streets of our towns and cities with brand new ribbons on their chests, each with a story about the wearer, if you can decipher what it means.

The decorations worn by our armed forces fall into two main categories. Awards are actually awards for outstanding bravery or valor whether in war or war, or for meritorious and meritorious service.
