Ww2 Military Rations - Soldiers who have beef with modern divisions should count their lucky stars instead. The original K-lack made for World War II was much, much worse. The biscuit was hard and the biscuit makers complained about it.
And if you think today's MREs are hard on your gut, try eating something that can destroy the machinery trying to do it. It is not surprising that the creator of K-deficiency later became the evangelist of proper nutrition.
Ww2 Military Rations
The development of nutrition has clearly come a long way since the early days of mobile warfare. During World War II, the US military needed a non-destructive, compact way to feed troops on the move in this new type of warfare. So they hired Dr. Ancel Keys, an anthropologist at the University of Minnesota, to create a real portion of food for the men fighting in the war. The lock arrived and the K-ration was born.
What's In A K Ration
As a scientist and expert on hygiene and nutrition, Keys was concerned (rightfully so) that the soldiers were not being given just enough energy to fight the war on both sides. He also wanted to make sure they were getting nutritious food.
Keys went to Witt's, a local grocery store, and picked out items that would work for him, including hard biscuits, sausage rolls and chocolate chips. He designed them in proportions that suited the needs of the Army and tested them on many soldiers at Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
The result was "probable". But it's a good start. Keys' design was supposed to provide the paratrooper with enough calories if he ran out of food and no more than 15 meals were ever intended. Next is the aforementioned biscuit, which is a mixture of grains mixed with dried meat that can be eaten or mixed with hot water to make a slurry.
The result of this effort was food, but some soldiers decided to eat this food. And so are the soldiers. When K-Meal was officially adopted, they worked out the kinks, and one "meal" consisted of three meals, each containing a can of meat, biscuits, powdered drink and candy - all in a package the size of a Cracker Jack. box.

The fruit bar was added later, because people needed fiber. Add cheese and bacon because this is America. It also includes everything needed after a meal, including toilet paper.
The problem with the K-ration plan, as with all plans, is that it did not survive contact with the enemy. The vitamins and minerals in it are not enough for a long time. K-Ration was not intended to be used for a long time, but that is what happened when the soldiers started fighting the enemy. To make matters worse, eating the same thing over and over gets old fast. K-ration did not survive long after World War II.
Although Keys was associated with designing the first K-Meals, his scientific career did not stop there. At the end of the Second World War, he began to believe that famine would soon spread in the countries that had experienced the worst of the war. He conducted the now famous Minnesota Hunger Experiment to dissect the effects of starvation on the body and mind while learning how to properly feed people to get back in shape. This will help later in the reconstruction of Europe and Japan.
Keys also continued to investigate the causes of heart disease in humans, using the Minnesota merchant diet as the first experimental study. He believed that it is hard animal fat that causes heart disease in the human body and then he conducted research on seven countries and how they eat to test his theory.

In 1958, he hired scientists in the United States, Finland, the Netherlands, Greece, Japan, Italy, Croatia, and Serbia to monitor and track the health and nutrition of subjects there. For him, the results were convincing: saturated fat is harmful to the human heart. His findings have since become a source of controversy among scientists

But Keys was convinced and recommended a diet with what we now know as the "Mediterranean diet," which he believed had the opposite effect on heart disease. The main proof of this strong belief is that he moved to the village of Pioppi on the south-west coast of Italy, where he spent the rest of his life.
Acel Keys died in 2004, just two months before his 101st birthday, an evangelist of Mediterranean cuisine to the end.

For today's US military in combat, this usually means rations, ready-to-eat meals, or MREs. The U.S. Army switched to MREs in the early 1980s, replacing the canned canned food that had supported troops from World War II through much of the Vietnam War. Roman soldiers hunted whatever they had, archaeological remains show, said Thomas R. Martin, professor of higher education at Holy Cross College. From the limited evidence of what the government in Rome gave to the soldiers, he added, the most important source of calories was carbohydrates: barley or wheat. A source said that the soldiers got half a kilo of meat a day. “For the army, you have to kill 120 sheep a day for a portion of meat. Or 60 pigs,” said Martin.
Whatever the actual number, it would not have been enough to support a Roman soldier, who was more than a "mule," Martin said. Along with their meals they were given wine - a diluted version of what we are used to - or something close to vinegar to help reduce the bacteria in the drinking water. For fuel, the Roman soldiers, not surprisingly, sought olive oil.
